Asylum Seekers as experts by experience: a case study from Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers – Sally Inman and Maggie Rogers with contributions from Ali Almoosa, Adel Maraghi and Godfrey Warui
Living through war, persecution, exile and the asylum system gives people an insight and knowledge that cannot be otherwise learned. As a sector and movement, we must recognise the value of this expertise and not view it as secondary https://refugeeweek.org.uk
The research suggests ways in which Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) can develop an experts by experience approach whereby make better use of the experience of clients in the day to day support and advice work, educational activities and in the management and organisational structure of the centre. The research team comprised client/ ex-clients and academic researchers, modelling an experts by experience approach. Clients, staff and volunteers were interviewed over the course of several months.
