Celebrating ten years of the Saturday Bookstalls
On Saturday 11th April there will be an extra special Bookstall in the Copleston Centre cafe, celebrating its ten year anniversary. The inspiration for this fundraising event in aid of Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) came from a Swansea bookshop which employed refugees. Selling a wide variety of donated books for adults and children, all in good condition, to help asylum seekers – what a good idea! Add homemade cakes, refreshments and a team of generous and dedicated volunteers and supporters and we had the perfect formula.
So on the 16th January 2016 we started our experiment and have since raised thousands of pounds for SDCAS. What has surprised us is how over time, the Bookstall (now every other month) has become an enjoyable and regular feature in people’s lives, as well as giving the opportunity to support a very worthwhile local charity.
We are glad to receive donated books on the day, but due to shortage of storage space, we can only take a few at a time. We welcome new visitors and supporters, so please join us on 11th April at the Copleston Centre, SE15 4AN, from 10.30 to 12.30 and share in our celebration.
