Racism, islamophobia and xenophobia have no place in our society. SDCAS stands together with all those targeted in the appalling attacks during this last week, many against people who came to the UK seeking safety from violence and persecution.
We call on the UK Government to make every effort to ensure that refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants, and black, Asian and Muslim British communities are protected against violence and hatred enacted by any groups – particularly as witnessed recently those from the ‘far-right’.
Violence does not emerge in a vacuum. For years, some politicians and press outlets have sought to normalise racism and promote divisive politics. The scapegoating and dehumanising of refugees and migrants must end and be replaced with political discourse which demonstrates dignity and respect.
We are immensely proud of the work we do at SDCAS. We will continue to welcome all asylum seekers, refugees and migrants and ensure our centres offer a space of safety, respect and community for all.
